La Tartana yesterday
In the ’50s the boutique “La Tartana” was opened based on an idea by Franco Caldiero and his brother Michele. It became soon one of the most visited and popular shops in Positano.
At the “Tartana”, you enter dressed with everyday clothing and come out ready to dive into the blue waters of Spiaggia Grande. Inside the boutique, indeed, there are not only clothes and shirts, but also beautiful swimming suits, colorful beach towels, beach shoes, bags and hats. Many years ago there were only straw hats and they adorned both the entrance and the inside shop walls.
Among the many people who came to the “Tartana”, many were coming from Capri. They were looking for comfortable clothing to stay on their boats and yachts and for original things that could not be found anywhere else.
Sometimes it happened that some known customers, after a long day sunbathing at the beach, asked Franco to host them for the night as they didn’t want to go back to Capri. Of course, the welcoming Franco was pleased to offer them hospitality in a small apartment.
Due to such a high number of requests, Franco and his wife Virginia, with their children now grown up, thought to redesign everything.
Each apartment was divided into many private rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and small private balconies overlooking the sea.
The huge, old kitchen became a bright breakfast room with adjoining bar area.
The nice, well furnished and comfortable living room allows guests to spend some relaxing hours reading a good book or a magazine after a day at the beach.
You can reach the small and elegant lobby from the “Vicolo Vito Savino”, one of the most characteristic streets of Positano; it is the same entrance of what it used to be the family house.
“Villa La Tartana” was opened in the year 2000, named after the boutique, of which it is almost the natural progression.
This small hotel, thanks to its enviable location just a few steps from the sea and to its familiar atmosphere, has been able to become important and popular over the years keeping the high standards of the traditional Positano hospitality.
